Yuyi wrote lyrical verses for a song titled, Cascabelito Migrante, which she intended to perform in her Pura Belpre Medal acceptance speech in 2019. When Yuyi could not perform the song due to time constraints, she filmed a video instead.
Cascabelito Migrante is a direct homage to the song, Cascabel, an old son jarocho standard. Son jarocho is the a genre of folk music native to the state of Veracruz, Mexico, where Yuyi resides. Yuyi’s additional verses that make up Cascabel Migrante are inspired by her book, Dreamers, and tell stories of migrant families and their children.
