Yuyi was invited by the organization, Embrace Race, to participate in a project, Drawing Across the Color Line with Kids, that would promote critical conversations around drawing and illustrating people of different races in children’s books. Embrace Race also invited authors and illustrators Grace Lin and Oge Mora to participate in this project with Yuyi and as part of this project, the three artists exchanged photos of each other and were tasked with drawing one another.

Yuyi, Grace, and Lin later took part in a discussion moderated by Embrace Race founders, Melissa Giraud and Andrew Grant-Thomas, where they talked about their artistic and personal evolutions and how they have learned to draw and paint and represent people who look like them. Drawing Across the Color Line with Kids culminated in a live webinar where the artists drew each other and took questions from the Embrace Race community to discuss how adults can support children to use drawing as a tool for seeing and honoring others.

Below is the filmed conversation from Drawing Across the Color Line with Kids.
